You've heard of hemp and CBD, but how does it work? Science points towards the endocannabinoid system. Also known as the ECS, it's a complex, multicell signalling system found in all mammals. Research shows it plays a vital role in health. More studies are necessary. However, experts know that there's a connection between the hemp plant and ECS.

What is the ECS?

In order to comprehend how CBD interacts with your brain, you first need to understand the ECS. The endocannabinoid system regulates many critical physiological functions, including mood, sleep, appetite, inflammation responses to injury or illness.

Endocannabinoids are the chemical substances found in the brain, nervous system, and other body parts.

They work by binding to specific receptors on cells called cannabinoid receptors which are part of the larger family of cell receptor proteins known as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).

These cannabinoid receptors can be activated by either neurotransmitter, such as anandamide and 2-AG, produced naturally by the body. Plant cannabinoids such as CBD and THC are derived from hemp.

The two most common receptors are cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2). These are found throughout the body. The CB1 is primarily found in the central and peripheral nervous systems, whereas the CB2 receptors are concentrated in the immune system.

CBD & the Endocannabinoid System

These cannabinoid receptors act as keys that lock into CBD molecules and activate various signaling pathways. Some of these interactions create the exhilarating psychoactive effects known as a 'high.' Others, such as CBD, assist with natural body functions such as mood and pain sensation.

There's one other compound that's not a phytocannabinoid that interacts with the ECS. The terpene caryophyllene, also found in cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper, can activate the cannabinoid receptors. A full spectrum CBD oil drop (or product) has the benefits of CBD plus the terpenes making the intraction with the ECS more applified and effective.

More of nature's chemicals most likely communicate with the endocannabinoid system. However, researchers have only been studying the ECS since the early 1990s. In contrast, scientists have been working with cannabinoids since the late 1930s. Now that CBD is legal, more studies are on the way. Keep an eye out for updates here.
